Thatcher Associates are pleased to be working with a regional contractor in the Somerset region to bring on board a Materials Buyer to join their Commercial Team. Our client has a successful portfolio of new build and refurbishment schemes up to 15 million. They have a strong reputation across the South West, and have a close, supportive team culture.

The Role

This contractor are seeking an experienced Construction professional to join their team as a Buyer (Housebuilding or Construction), who is capable of overseeing multiple projects in total in the South West area at anyone time.
  • You will attend design meetings and procurement reviews with the commercial and project teams.
  • Be in charge of product selection, providing quotations for cost certainty and the supply chain development.
  • Value engineering 
  • Tendering, negotiation and placement of sub-contract orders, chairing meetings when relevant, management and resourcing of suppliers and sub-contractors.
  • You will also enable development of the commercial approach into working practices and deliver successful outcome.
  • Be the main lead in setting up supply chains for material & subcontract packages.
  • Ensuring the timely processing of requisitions and material orders.
  • Regularly assessing the suppliers and subcontractors to KPI’s.
  • Creating tender lists and overseeing all tendering requirements. 
  • Supporting the contract preparation and issuing. 
The Team

You’d be working alongside reporting into the Commercial Manager and regional Buyer. In the Commercial Team currently there are around 5 - 10 people – everyone supporting one another, and approaching their roles with an upbeat and positive attitude. 

Required Skills:
  • Construction experience is preferable
  • A good understanding of housebuilding and main contracting
  • Confident, organised and able to work to budgets and deadlines
  • Customer focused, attentive to detail and communicative 
  • Strong numeracy and financial management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills – including use of procurement systems.
  • Negotiation and team work skills and the ability to motivate and lead.
Essential:
  • Good communication.
  • Previous experience of sub-contract procurement.
  • Previous experience of working for either a main contractor or well established developer.
  • A good level of competency of Microsoft packages.
  • An industry applicable ONC/HNC/BSc equivalent;
